Intern Incentive Allowance for Rural Pharmacies (formerly the Rural Pharmacist Pre-Registration Incentive Allowance)

  

The Rural Pharmacist Intern Incentive Allowance is aimed at increasing and supporting the rural and remote pharmacy workforce by encouraging pharmacists to practice in rural and remote areas.

A maximum allowance of $10,000 (excluding GST) per intern may be made to eligible community pharmacies and/or an approved hospital authority engaging a pharmacy intern employee for a continuous 12 month period. A maximum allowance of $5,000 (excluding GST) per intern may be made to eligible community pharmacies and/or an approved hospital authority engaging a pharmacy intern employee for a continuous 6 month period. Payments to pharmacies engaging a pharmacy intern for a period between 6 months and 12 months will be calculated on a pro-rata basis.

Applicants must apply within 3 calendar months of the commencement date of the placement to be eligible. This rule applies in all circumstances, including any applicants waiting to receive permanent residency or Australian citizenship.  

The Rural Pharmacist Intern Incentive Allowance is open to those who meet the following eligibility criteria. Applicants must:

  • be an Australian citizen, or permanent resident of Australia (certified copy of; passport photo page, Australian birth certificate, Australian citizenship certificate);
  • have completed a pharmacy course approved by the Pharmacy Board of Australia and be eligible to undertake intern training requirements;
  • must be employed by the pharmacy for a minimum of 6 continuous months; and 
  • must agree to the reporting requirements in the Program Specific Guidelines.
